Lucha Libre: Behind the Mask

Montegrappa ventures into the world of Mexican wrestling with the new Lucha Libre, translating the sport's energy and theatricality into a writing instrument.

Inspiration

Lucha Libre is a sport Mexicans take great pride in. With a history spanning more than 160 years, it has grown into a recognisable cultural phenomenon. In 2018, it was even recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by Mexico City. But beyond the dramatic fights in the arena, Lucha Libre is also about epic rivalries, theatrical spectacle and, of course, the sacred, colourful masks. Montegrappa celebrates this cultural symbol through a series of details, including the iconic luchador mask, championship belt, wrestling-ring ropes and flame motifs.

Design & Materials

The edition brings together sterling silver with glossy resin, 3N yellow-gold plating and polychrome enamel. To recreate the ropes of a wrestling ring, Montegrappa used a three-dimensional sterling silver structure around the barrel. The theme continues on the clip decorated with LUCHA LIBRE and an engraved championship belt in sterling silver with gold-plated details, sits at the base of the cap.
The highlight of the edition, a luchador mask, appears in two realistic interpretations on opposite sides of the barrel. One uses translucent enamel over a guilloché-patterned surface, while the other is rendered in sterling silver with raised details, textures and ornamental decoration.

Writing Experience & Collectibility

The fountain pen uses a piston-filling system and is fitted with an 18k gold nib engraved with the luchador mask, reinforcing the theme. Nib sizes range from EF, F, M, and B to Stub 1.1, offering plenty of choice depending on your preferred writing style. Lucha Libre is also available as a rollerball, sharing the same design language. The edition is limited to 96 fountain pens and 96 rollerballs, a reference to 1996, which Montegrappa describes as a landmark year in the international rise of modern Lucha Libre.

The custom presentation case is inspired by a wrestling ring, using ropes and a stage-like setting to turn the unveiling into part of the spectacle. Under the spotlight, the pen takes centre stage much like a luchador entering the arena.
