Penmakers Atelier Shortcap Brass Fountain Pen

The SHORTCAP is a handcrafted fountain pen made from the custom “The Penmaker’s Atelier” ebonite edition, developed exclusively for ELBWOOD at the Schönberger Ebonite Manufaktur (SEM) in Hitzacker, Germany, with master penmaker Frank Pressentin involved in its production on site. The barrel and cap feature a calm, satin-finished ebonite surface, with a distinctive colour palette inspired by the tones of the ELBWOOD atelier. Naturally warm and organic to the touch, ebonite has been a classic material in fine writing instruments since the 1920s. Each piece is crafted from solid material, finished entirely by hand, and individually numbered, with its reference number uniquely identifying it as a special edition of 2026.

Elegant and refined, with a distinctive visual character, the SHORTCAP reveals more of its construction than its longer counterpart. Its shortened cap exposes the finely knurled brass grip section, bringing the technical precision of its craftsmanship to the forefront.

The calm, elongated form of the SHORTCAP is deliberately interrupted by the vertically knurled grip section. The precisely cut 0.5 mm grooves provide a secure grip and controlled nib guidance, combining functional precision with a distinctive visual detail. The warm tone of the brass creates a compelling contrast with the organic colour and texture of the Penmaker’s Atelier ebonite.

The barrel and cap are crafted from fine ebonite from the Schönberger Ebonite Manufaktur (SEM), in the Custom Edition “The Penmaker’s Atelier” developed exclusively for ELBWOOD with Frank Pressentin involved in its production on site. The material is silky polished to reveal the characteristic colour play of this edition while preserving its warm, organic tactile quality. ELBWOOD works from solid material throughout: the mechanical components, grip section and all structural elements, including concealed parts, are crafted from solid brass, creating a consistent sense of materiality throughout the writing instrument.

Over time, the brass develops a natural patina through use, adding depth and individuality to each piece. The surface can be polished back to a brighter finish whenever desired. This natural evolution is an inherent expression of the material rather than a flaw.
