Every element of the design follows a precise geometric logic. Length, diameter and weight have been carefully balanced to create a long, slender and elegant writing instrument, with the capped pen forming a clear, concise silhouette. The design deliberately steps back, allowing the interplay of surface, reflections and finely executed details to take centre stage.

A defining feature of the SHORTCAP is its exposed grip section. The finely knurled grip remains visible beneath the shortened cap, creating a deliberate contrast with the calm cylindrical form. The precisely cut 0.5 mm grooves provide a secure grip and controlled nib guidance, combining functional precision with a distinctive visual detail. As an ELBWOOD signature, the exposed grip brings the technical precision of the pen’s construction visibly to the surface.

The construction and design are seamlessly integrated. A precisely engineered three-start thread allows the cap to be securely fitted with a single turn, while remaining fully integrated into the overall form without exposing unnecessary technical details. The result is a writing instrument defined by clarity, precision and a sense of considered simplicity.

The barrel and cap are crafted from carefully seasoned Königsholz, a dense, finely grained hardwood known for its natural hardness, durability and warm, pleasant tactile quality. The surface is carefully worked and naturally refined to bring out the distinctive grain while preserving the wood’s lively, organic character.

The grip section, mechanical components and all structural elements, including concealed parts, are crafted from solid brass. ELBWOOD works from solid material throughout, creating a continuous sense of materiality across every part of the writing instrument – warm Königsholz on the exterior, supported by a precisely engineered brass core.

Over time, the brass develops a natural patina through use, adding depth and individuality to each piece. The surface can be polished back to a brighter finish whenever desired. This natural evolution is an inherent expression of the material rather than a flaw.
